What Is a Stock?

A stock (also called an equity or share) represents partial ownership in a publicly listed company. When you buy a stock, you become a shareholder, meaning you own a small portion of that business and may benefit if the company grows over time.

For example, when you buy shares in companies like Apple, Microsoft, NVIDIA, or Saudi-listed companies on Tadawul, you participate in their potential growth. As the company's value increases, the share price may rise. Some companies also distribute a portion of their profits to shareholders through dividend payments.

Unlike fixed-income investments, stocks do not guarantee returns. Their prices move daily based on company performance, investor sentiment, economic conditions, interest rates, and market news. Because of this, investing in stocks carries both opportunities and risks.

Many investors build long-term wealth by holding diversified portfolios of well-researched stocks rather than trying to predict short-term market movements. If you're new to investing, it's also worth understanding What Is Diversification?, which explains why spreading investments across different companies and sectors can help reduce risk.

With Raseed, eligible investors in Saudi Arabia and the GCC can invest in US-listed stocks, ETFs, and more — all from one regulated investment platform.
