What Is Market Capitalization (Market Cap)?

What Is Market Capitalization (Market Cap)?

Market capitalization, commonly called market cap, represents the total market value of a publicly traded company's outstanding shares. It is one of the most widely used measurements for comparing the size of listed companies.

Market capitalization is calculated using a simple formula:

Market Cap = Current Share Price × Total Outstanding Shares

For example, if a company has one billion outstanding shares trading at $100 per share, its market capitalization is $100 billion.

Investors often use market cap to understand a company's size and compare businesses within the same industry. Companies are generally grouped into three broad categories:

  • •Large-cap companies (typically above $10 billion) are usually well-established businesses with stable operations.
  • •Mid-cap companies often have greater growth potential while carrying moderately higher risk.
  • •Small-cap companies can offer significant long-term growth opportunities but usually experience greater price volatility.
Market capitalization should not be confused with a company's revenue, profits, or enterprise value. A company's stock price can rise or fall every trading day, causing its market cap to change accordingly.

When researching investments, market cap should be considered alongside other financial metrics such as the Price-to-Earnings (P/E) Ratio, revenue growth, profitability, and debt levels.

Many investors also diversify across companies with different market capitalizations to balance growth potential with portfolio stability.

Through Raseed, investors can access companies of all sizes listed on major US exchanges, allowing them to build portfolios that align with their investment goals and risk tolerance.
