What Happens to My New or Existing Orders During a Trading Halt?

When a stock enters a trading halt, any new or existing orders for that security are generally affected until trading resumes.

If you already submitted an order before the halt began and it was not executed, it will usually remain pending unless you choose to modify or cancel it (subject to exchange rules and your broker's order handling procedures).

During many types of trading halts, investors may still be able to enter, modify, or cancel eligible orders. However, these orders are not executed while the halt remains in effect. Instead, they are held in the exchange's order book and may participate in the reopening process once trading resumes.

When the exchange determines that trading can restart, it typically conducts a reopening auction or price discovery process to establish a reopening price based on available buy and sell orders before normal trading continues. Because many investors may submit orders during the halt, the reopening price can differ significantly from the last traded price before the halt began.

For this reason, investors should always review any pending market or limit orders before trading resumes, especially if new information has been released during the halt.
